Promoting British Values

In 2011 the government set out its ‘British values’ for life in modern Britain. These were Democracy, Rule of law, Individual liberty, Mutual respect and Tolerance of those of other faiths and beliefs.

At Clee Hill Community Academy, these key values are discussed and celebrated in assemblies alongside our PSHE (personal, social and health education) and SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) teaching. When developing our wider curriculum, we have ensured that these values, in addition to our school values, are embedded in our planning and delivery.

Children understand and apply these values through a range of learning opportunities at Clee Hill Community Academy. For example:

Democracy

  • Pupils are taught the values and reasons behind laws and rules, the responsibility this involves and the consequences of when laws and rules are broken.
  • Children may have opportunities for their voice to be heard through circle time, school councils and questionnaires.
  •  ‘School Council’ where children nominate one another, vote for representatives, and take part in developing the school

Individual liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

Rule of law

  • We follow rules to keep us safe.
  • We understand that we have a responsibility to care for others in our school.

Mutual respect

  • Children learn that their behaviours can influence their own learning and those of others.

Tolerance of those of other faiths and beliefs

  • Emphasis is placed on promoting diversity with the children through assemblies, stories or celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.
  • Exploring spirituality curriculum which embraces the celebration of differences and draws upon similarities between different religions.
  • Listen and act out Christian stories during our ‘Open our book’ assemblies
  • Reflection time is important regardless of our faith.
  • We celebrate a variety of faiths and cultures throughout the year.
